Why Make Comics With A Remote Team?

In Industry Trends, Practices by Phillip Allen

This article will probably only continue to grow in value as time goes on. This article will discuss the reasons why you would want to make comics with a remote team of creative comic creators.

Whether you’re a comic writer looking for an illustrator, or an penciller looking for someone to cover the inking in of your comic. Or maybe you’re a comic publisher looking to find a good comic editor to handle your growing workload. Taking the decision to produce a comic with a remote team may be the best solution to your problems.

This article will focus more on why someone would want to make comics with a remote team instead of how. The next article will focus on that!

So, let’s get right down to it.

Why Look For A Remote Comic Creating Collaborator?

In a big city, it’s arguably easier to find someone locally that would be interested in hiring you to work on their comic, or for you to find someone to work with for your own project. At least, you may have options to the types of styles that the local potential collaborators can bring to the table.

What Happens If You Don’t Live In, Or near, A Big City?

Would you ask that an artist, writer, or editor move the distance for a single comic, a volume, or an ongoing series? Do you think they’d do it? No. Most likely, unless you’re offering stable income or if that collaborator already had plans to move to your area there is probably no way that they would agree to work face to face with you.

Remote Work Opens A World Full Of Creative Talent

Regardless of where you live, if you have reliable access to the internet you can manage your very own remote comic creating team. There are amazing writer, illustrators, editors all over the world and they’re just waiting to get their next gig from you.

It’s Easier Than Ever To Ever To Hire And Manage A Remote Comic Creating Team

There are free, and premium, tools available for:

  • Managing files
  • Communication
  • Manage workflow and
    Tracking time worked
  • I’ll talk more about these tools in the next article.

Doing this can help expedite your comic’s project workflow quite significantly even with a local comic creating team.

It Can Be Faster To Build Your Dream Team

What’s to say that a local artist that you’re trying to sign on isn’t too busy with his other projects to pick yours up? What’s to say that he isn’t planning on moving to your area for another few months, or that he might change his mind? Well, maybe the artist with the skills and styles you are hoping to find is out there in some little corner of the world, just itching for the chance to work on your next amazing comic. As long as it takes to get someone set up to work with you remotely would be the only time it would take get yourself ready to make comics with a remote team.

It Can Be Cheaper

Depending on where you live, paying an artist a fair living wage for their work can be very costly. Now, I don’t generally approve of this cost-saving measure myself, but hiring and paying a comic writer, editor, or illustrator in a different country less than you would a local one is an option.

Many creators and collaborators exist in much poorer countries and they would be able to live off of a fraction of the pay a local artist may request. I personally believe that fair pay is fair everywhere. I strongly recommend paying a comic creator or collaborator of the same skill the same wage, regardless of where they are located. Please understand that there can be negative repercussions if your readers find out that you didn’t pay your remote comic creating team a fair wage.

In Summation

If you want to make comics with a remote team then there really is no shortage of benefits for getting started. It’s easier than ever. You are far more likely to find the talent you want. It can be faster to get a team together Additionally, depending on where your team is located, you could end up saving money on pay (but please consider what you might be risking when doing this).

The next article will cover the ways that you can start to make comics with a remote team effectively and efficiently.

Writer, Editor, and Founder of Unknown Comics

Hello there! My name is Phillip Allen and I'm the writer, editor, and founder of Unknown Comics. I am an aspiring comic book creator. In an attempt to learn how to create my own comic I came to learn just how few reliable resources existed out there. From a few books and unhelpful websites I decided to focus my attention on researching and writing a resource for both myself and the rest of the comic creating industry. This website and and its content is the result of all of that hard work.
